TPLO Surgery

What is TPLO Surgery?

TPLO surgery, also known as Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, is an orthopedic procedure commonly performed on dogs to treat cranial cruciate ligament, or CCL, injuries. When a dog's CCL is ruptured or partially torn, it can lead to instability in the knee joint, causing pain, lameness, and difficulty walking. Without intervention, this condition can worsen over time, leading to osteoarthritis and decreased mobility. TPLO surgery aims to stabilize the knee joint by altering the biomechanics of the joint, reducing pain, and promoting joint health.

The Procedure

During TPLO surgery, our veterinarian makes an incision in the dog's knee to access the damaged ligament. Unlike some other surgical techniques, TPLO does not attempt to repair the torn ligament but rather alters the mechanics of the joint to minimize the need for ligament function. This is achieved by reshaping the top of the tibia to change the angle at which the femur meets the tibia, reducing the need for the CCL's stabilizing function.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

After surgery, proper rehabilitation is crucial for a successful outcome. Our veterinarian will provide comprehensive post-operative care and rehabilitation plans tailored to each pet's needs. This may include physical therapy, controlled exercise, pain management, and regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress and address any concerns.

Senior Pet Care Considerations

Senior pets, in particular, may benefit significantly from TPLO surgery. While age can be a factor in surgical candidacy, many older dogs experience improved mobility and comfort following TPLO surgery. We carefully assess each pet's individual health status and consider factors such as overall health, mobility, and quality of life to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
