Lameness and Limping

Senior Pet Care

Although we care for pets of every age, we know that older pets need special care and attention. When you need senior pet care, we can help give them extra time and a gentle touch. When pets get older, they develop special nutritional needs, and our team knows what type of food they need. They need exercise, but let them go at their own pace. If they’re limping or unable to walk, it may be time to bring them into our pet hospital.

Limping and Lameness in Pets

Limping is walking in a pattern that shows your pet is trying to avoid putting weight on one of his legs. This can happen because of a fracture or an injury to a muscle or tendon. If your pet is unable to walk, that is called lameness. Lameness can be due to an injury or even due to an infection.

What to Do if Your Pet Is Lame

If your pet is having trouble walking, or has stopped walking altogether, it may be time to see a veterinarian near you.

A veterinarian on our veterinary team will examine your pet and, when we find the reason he is limping or lame, we will explain the treatment options to you. Sometimes, the pet just needs pain medication or antibiotics. He may also need to wear a brace or a cast. If he needs surgery, we can help give him the care he needs.
